Hij is niet perfect, helemaal niet. Hij staat wat schuin en zijn stam is verdraaid, maar dat komt omdat hij op een soort richel staat. Het is zijn verweer tegen omvallen. Maar zijn takken spreidt hij naar alle kanten uit, ja, die vrijheid heeft hij wel.
Tegen mijn oudste dochter zei ik toen: 'Weet je, ik heb een boom in het bos.'
'Hu, mama', antwoordde ze, 'een boom! Die van jou is?'
Ik knikte met volle overtuiging.
'En waarom is die van jou?' wilde ze toen toch weten.
'wel, gewoon, omdat ik er meer van hou dan alle andere mensen.'
Ondertussen weten ook de kleinkinderen van het bestaan van mijn boom af.
Telkens ik naar het Bulskampveld ga, passeer ik hem. Ik groet hem dan en soms wijk ik af van het pad en moet eventjes zijn stam aanraken.
