Forest bathing has also taken root in Belgium. The definition of forest baths includes all preventive or curative practices that take place in the forest environment. Terms you often hear are shinrinyoku, forest bathing, forest therapy, forest mindfulness, forest mind and so on ... This can all be quite confusing. These practices have a similar characteristic: they aim to stimulate as many senses as possible. Many practitioners will slowly sharpen their capacity of feeling. As a result, our body relaxes and ultimately the mind relaxes and clarifies as well. Forest therapy goes a step further. You can call it forest baths, but not every forest pool can be called forest therapy. In forest therapy, the forest becomes the therapist who gives the practitioner what he or she needs. Forest therapy guides provide a comfortable and safe environment for the practitioner to find his or her own medicine, at his / her pace. Click on one of the right buttons to discover more. • Essentiële oliën | Bosbaden

Essential oils A new section in the newsletter. Each time, Ilona Gosseries highlights an essential oil. Contact her for more information via the contact form of this website. Who am I? I am a mom of two teens and a full time working woman. I am a perfectionist and therefore often take too much on my fork. I also want to do everything myself. Fortunately I have been able to go for a forest bath a few times, which was a real relief for me, a relaxation from the hectic life, away from it all ... This combined with the essential oils really works to relax you intensely. Which brand do I choose and why? I personally work with Young Living essential oil. They give the guarantee 'From seed to seal', which means that they follow the entire process from the growth of the natural ingredient you need (flower, tree, herb, etc ...) through the manufacture of the oil until it is put into the bottle is. They therefore work with their own farms and only with natural means, for example to combat caterpillars, they just use a vein of herb that they put next to the herb they need to chase away the harmful animals. They never use chemical and toxic substances. The oils are also 100% natural. Tips for use You can always smear, smell or diffuse the oil diluted. When diffusing, you have to make sure that you do not heat the oil, because then you burn it and you do not get the desired effects. Use a good diffuser for this. Why is it so important to get a good quality diffuser? The way of spraying is very important. Of course you want your quality oils to be optimally dispersed in the air. Young Living's diffusers have been extensively tested for their atomizing power. Due to the ultrasonic vibrating plate, the diffusers are cold atomized in the room in a good way, so that the quality of the oil is guaranteed. In addition, the material of which the diffuser is made is essential. The inside of the diffusers is made of high-quality plastic, which will not be affected by the oils and so that no plastic will end up in the air (and your airways). There are a lot of lesser quality diffusers on the market that are not made of this high-quality plastic and where the plastic is therefore affected by the pure oils with all its consequences. So consciously choose a Young Living quality diffuser to diffuse your oils. To smell, you only have to put 1 drop on your hand and then rub both hands together. Then make a bowl with both hands and place it over your nose. Do not inhale too closely and vigorously at first because the oils are so intense. To lubricate, use a few drops of the essential oil and then dilute it in what we call a carrier oil. At Young Living they have the V6 oil for this, but you can also use almond oil or jojoba. Usually the correct ratio is 1 drop of essential oil (EO) to 10 ml of base oil. You should never put the oil in your eyes or ears. If you did get oil in your eye, you have to dilute it with carrier oil, never with water, which really does not work and will only make it worse. If you use an oil for the first time, always try on your arm to see if you do not react allergic and do this best diluted because they are so powerful. Often it is smeared on the feet because it is one of the fastest areas to absorb the oil because the pores are so large there. Other areas that absorb the oil quickly are the wrists and the area behind the ears. • Eerder gestelde vragen | Bosbaden

Previously asked questions Here we list the questions that guides (in training) or people who would like to do training have already asked. Can you make a living as a forest bath guide? No. Not full time. Not in Flanders. I definitely recommend reading an interesting blog by an experienced (and well-known international guide) before you resign and start training: https://juliaplevin.medium.com/can-you-make-a-living-as -a-forest-therapy-guide-30033a04ec02 You certainly cannot get rich. And even then it would not fit the authenticity of your calling. My costs (including investment costs) are even greater, but since I see forest bathing guide training and the things that will happen to you afterwards as part of my personal development and health promotion and quest for authenticity, that's okay for me. Which training suits me best? You will already find a (not complete) list on the page of courses. We recommend that you first find out for yourself why you want to do a training and what you want to get out of it. From this you can distil your own criteria. Contact different study programs and see which study program best meets your criteria. Here are some guiding questions: Do you want to strengthen your own 'nature connection'? Do you also want to make a personal development yourself? Do you already guide forest baths? Are you a nature coach? And are you mainly looking for a way to validate that with a certificate? Are you a clinical psychologist or doctor and would you like to understand the (medical) science behind forest baths? How much money do you want to spend? How much time do you want to - and can - invest? (Usually the time to want is longer than to be able to). Do you want to do this in Belgium? Or are you willing to go abroad? Do you want to do this at your own pace? Or via a timetable of the trainer? How creative and enterprising are you? (Especially if you want to earn some money afterwards) ... At FTI and ANFT we have to take an outdoor / wilderness first aid (4 pm - 2 days) to obtain our certificate. Are you informed or can you recommend an organization in Belgium? An organization organizes it once a year, but then I have to wait another 9 months. Ah yes, the wilderness first aid training is really very difficult to find in Belgium. I also had to do that from ANFT. It is also recommended by ANFT to do this every two years as well, as a kind of refresher. You can also contact an organization to provide training this summer in Belgium, perhaps especially for forest bathing guides. There are several organizations that can give that in Belgium. You must have a minimum number of participants, but maybe you can look through the facebook group of the FB guides to see how much interest would be in such training and then appeal to an organization? Another option is to follow that online. I was lucky that ANFT allowed me to do it online at the end of my practical, also because that was all I had to do and the pandemic was then called. The problem is that there is a lot of physical contact: you should always have a regular 'sidekick' to practice on. I had to take pictures of how to care for a broken leg and was lucky that my mum (my hug contact) was willing. Don't they allow online courses in FTI as well? More questions Don't hesitate to ask us. --- These questions have been answered by Wendy Wuyts.

How the Celtic annual festivals can give an in-depth accent to a forest pool By Emmy Schockaert - www.barrevoets.be March 16, 2021 Like an onion The intense nature connection that you can experience during a forest bath is very special. As a forest bathing guide, I love the moment when I see the participants merge with the forest and with themselves. You can see it in their eyes that get a little glassy and the blissful smile playing on their faces. It strikes me time and again that this moment of connection usually already takes place during the beginning of the forest pool. From that moment on, a hidden gate opens up somewhere in us through which the forest can easily penetrate into us, deeper and deeper. I like to compare the experience with an onion of which we remove a peel more and more during the forest bath to eventually reach the core. Each forest pool is different and each participant experiences a forest pool in his own unique way. And every forest bathing guide is also different and has its own specific accent in his / her offer. What I think we all have in common are the basic ingredients of a forest bath, namely the stillness, slowing down and the conscious opening of the senses so that the atmosphere can flow into the forest. In addition, there is a whole range of different ingredients that forest bathing guides use to create their own style. Special ingredient What I love as a 'special ingredient' are the Celtic seasonal festivals. Since my early years, these parties have been an important guideline and that is why it is a matter of course to weave them into the Barrevoets offer. They act as coat hangers around which I build my walks (but also by extension my life). Our Celtic and Germanic ancestors (by extension all natural peoples) probably did not know a word like 'nature connection' at all, they were so intensely one with nature in a way that we do not know today that such words were completely unnecessary. I don't see them agreeing to go forest bathing 😊 That is precisely why their past offers such a rich source of inspiration to integrate into nature-connecting activities such as forest bathing. The cycles of their annual celebrations are like gateways that open a profound connection with the natural world and with our own true natural inner world - our inner landscape. As a forest bathing guide and nature coach, I like to lift the veils that hang around these gates a bit and make them visible to the participants. For example, some of the invitations or exercises that shape the forest pool each time become a small ceremony or ritual that serves as anchor points to internalize that from the outside world. The seasonal parties are, as it were, a kind of natural mirror where we can become aware of what is really going on, separate from the everyday, but linked to the transition from one to the other. They are linked to change, to transitions and can help us to make contact within ourselves with what we want to change, renew, process. Ancient roots My experience with integrating the seasonal parties in a forest pool or nature coaching is that it brings an in-depth accent. By integrating a touch of our common ancestry, we also connect with our ancient common roots. It is plugging into our collective rhythm that lies deep within us, stored in our genes. Celebrating the feasts together connects the generations: we inherit the customs of our ancestors and at the same time we give them to our children. In this way we are connected with the past and with the future through honoring the old traditions, while we are just very mindful in the now. This writing makes me curious about where fellow forest bathing guides place their emphasis. What different ways does the forest bath world have? What effect does this have on the participants? How does this translate into their natural connection? Fascinating! --- Emmy Schockaert is a creative forest bathing guide / nature coach. She mainly guides in forests in the Flemish Ardennes. She is also the driving force behind Barrevoets . Nature is her passion and green thread in life. With Barrevoets she wants to be a link in the connection between man and nature. She combines her training as a nature guide, herbalist, nature coach and forest bathing guide (Shinrin Yoku / Metzamieli) in guided hikes. It is not walking but the slowing down, stillness and stimulation of the senses central. Emmy likes to use our Celtic background as a guide. The seasons and the rhythm in nature are her source of inspiration. She also often works with CM . You can follow her on facebook and instagram .

  • The Humans behind this collective | Bosbaden

The 'Humans' behind this Collective Wendy Wuyts I will take the leading role. My story starts in Japan. From the second half of 2017 until early 2020, I lived in a male dominated environment in a Japanese city and tapped into nature based art and health practices and organized voluntarily other forest baths for fellow international fellow feminist students of my university to cope with loneliness and experiences of micro-aggression. She returned to Belgium in February 2020, just before the first COVID-19 related measures got implemented there. These measures (eg social distancing, forbidding places and moments of gathering and participation) have an impact on the mental health of many citizens. I started to build a network of forest therapy guides in Belgium, a portal website about the practice. Photo 1: A park in Nagoya, Japan, with feminist students from Nagoya University After the forest bath, there was a circle moment where we read an old Japanese myth of Amaterasu's rape and the impact on her environment (humans and the more than human world). Some students shared there for the first time their personal experience why they engage in voluntary work for this feminist student club. Read more in a blog at woodwidewebstories.com Vitalija Povilaityte-Petri I was born and raised in Lithuania. I experienced soviet regime followed by big political and societal transformations which enabled me to develop strong resilience skills from a young age. Since 1999, from the age of 26, I was living and doing research in several places in Europe: France, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. My interests shifted from plant chemistry into understanding of functioning of ecosystems and interactions of people with each other and other than the human world. I have been living in Belgium for 15 years. After traveling in different scientific fields (pharmaceutical and food sciences, botany, social anthropology and environmental-community psychology) in various cultural landscapes and interacting with people of different backgrounds, I came to understand that many challenges we are facing globally can be addressed only collectively as we are all one and interconnected. I believe we can succeed together by transforming into cocreation, trust, togetherness culture where we embrace complexity of various systems and where we work in multiple contexts at the same time. We can move together by nourishing our senses and skills of belonging and oneness. Our personal development is fostered by giving meaning to our collective actions where each person has the opportunity to discover their own place and true nature by living in a nature-connected world. In this his project we aim to explore the need of belonging as a main driving force to trigger and open the highest human creativity and engage deeply into creating communities of meaning. Photo 2: In November 2020 we organized cocreation research day at Jean Massart experimental garden of Brussels Free University (Université libre de Bruxelles, ULB) and Sonial forest (included in UNESCO heritage list) to explore possible transformation between gardens and forest. Can garden be perceived as a forest and can we experience forest as a garden? The study day started by 2 hours guided forest bath walk which included a forest tea ceremony and group exchanges about local forest medicinal plants. I am a pharmacist and transdisciplinary researcher focusing on nature-based health practices for health / wellbeing promotion and disease prevention. Last 2 years I was exploring participatory research and cocreation methods with local multicultural Brussels communities to understand better ongoing transformation of local inner and outer therapeutic landscapes. In the Health Gardens of Brussels project with more than 200 co-researchers I was co-learning about our relationships with nature and how those relationships affect our health and the health of the local urban ecosystem. Belonging to place and connection with one-self, community and other than the human world is central in co-creating Health Gardens in Brussels. We experienced that need of belonging to human and other than human world if a fundamental need and prerequisite to human good functioning, flourishing, fulfillment and life filled with meaning. In Haspengouw o.a. Domein Nieuwenhoven - St Truiden, Herkenrodebossen - Hasselt De Antwerpse Kempen, nl.
